Any position has an individual, characteristic pattern - or a 'face'. Every flipped edge pair is to find in its own position within the twisted corners.

The 'windwheel' of the first four looks to the right, clockwise, the following counterwise.

From the outer side we have then four different positions of the flipped edges:

Rider: the edge pair sits on the 'windwheel' Reiter: das Kantenpaar sitzt dem 'Windrad' auf

Guest: the pair is within the wheel       Gast: das Kantenpaar fährt im 'Windrad' mit.

Horse: Those stones lead the wheel       Pferd: dieses Paar sitzt vor dem Windrad

Passant: the pair is without the wheel       Passant: Hier befindet es sich außerhalb des 'Windrades'

With opposite flipped edges there are two ways to characterize the face: first one edge is before the wheel, in the second case behind. First impression is that before steeps the face, that behind flatens this:

Irregular twisted corners have truly a face. The here shown upper corners, twisted straight, are the eyes, the lower, odd twisted corners are the ears. The diagonal flipped edges are either 'left, right eye' or 'left, right ear'.

Opposite flipped edges I call here 'key' and 'bar'. Vertical orientation is the key, horizontal is bar.

With 'odd' and 'straight' corners I'm using the terms 'eye' and 'ear'.
go to the top of the site

straight eye left gerades Auge links

straight eye right     gerades Auge rechts

straight ear left     gerades Ohr links

straight ear right     gerades Ohr rechts

odd eye left     ungerades Auge links

odd eye right     ungerades Auge rechts

odd ear left     ungerades Ohr links

odd ear right     ungerades Ohr rechts

At the end the 'regular' corners remain. They are named by the same scheme, but only with eyes, due to symmetry:     Zuletzt bleiben noch die 'regulären' Ecken.

regular eye right     reguläres Auge rechts

Further in the last three cases the terms 'key' and 'bar' are used as described before: odd key, straight bar, regular key.
